National Nurses Week
Since 1993, May has dedicated a week to celebrate nurses! According to the American Nurses Association, it is a time “to recognize the vast contributions and positive impact of America’s 4 million registered nurses”. As of 2020, National Nurses Week has been extended to the entire month of May!
2020, The Year of the Nurse
2020 was actually declared as the International Year of the Nurse! You may be thinking this is clearly because of their commitment to fighting the pandemic, however it was determined in 2019 by the World Health Organization that 2020 would be the year of the nurse being the 200th anniversary of Florence Nightingale, known as the founder of modern nursing.
How We Can Honor Nurses
In the month of May, here is how we can be thinking of and honoring our nurses!
Week 1: Self-Care
The first week is focused on the mental and physical health of nurses. Oftentimes nurses work twelve hour shifts, half of them work through the night. No matter the hours, nurses always appreciate an uplifting note or a coffee! You can even take it a step further and offer to take their kids to the park to let them nap or run errands one day.
Week 2: Recognition
Time to raise awareness! A great way to recognize nurses in Week 2 is to create a social media post that publicly thanks your nurse friend or family member for their dedication to such a critical mission. Their dedication begins with a nursing degree, followed by the required test to obtain a license, searching for a career, and the dedication doesn’t stop after that!
Week 3: Professional Development
The American Nurses Association is releasing a free webinar on May 19th from 1PM-2PM to release the fourth edition of the Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice. This will be a great opportunity to refresh your knowledge on the definition and scope of nursing.
Week 4: Community Engagement
Help spread the word that nurses are community heroes! We want to continue encouraging the support and recognition of our nurses, including the families behind them supporting them living out their dreams.
Be sure to give your favorite nurses a shout out this month! Keep it going!
