What is it?
The Dorsal Root Ganglion Stimulation is a non-opioid therapy specifically designed to help manage chronic nerve pain. DRG therapy targets specific regions of the spinal cord that are transmitting painful signals from your lower limbs to your brain. The stimulation sends mild electrical pulses to the nerves before these signals pass through the Dorsal Root Ganglion.
What does it feel like?
By the time the pain signals reach the brain and manifest as physical pain, they are weakened. Pain interrupting signals are sent out from a battery-operated device called a spinal cord stimulator that is implanted under the skin by a pain doctor. A small wire equipped with electrodes delivers mild pulses of electricity to the nerves in the spinal cord. These pulses interfere with pain signals leaving the spine, causing them to be significantly weakened by the time they reach the brain. The patient turns the spinal cord stimulator on and off and adjusts the settings with a handheld remote control unit.
DRG Therapy and Knee Pain
Many people and our patients suffer from chronic knee pain. The knee area contains multiple nerves. Even with the utmost care, a nerve can be injured during knee surgery. The nerve pain that may develop from this injury if often life-lasting.
