With so many consecutive days of rain, we Houstonians are awfully familiar with what’s coming next. We wanted to do some research on a natural, homemade mosquito repellent to keep away the bites without that strong chemical-like odor! Check out the recipe options below, you likely have these ingredients in your home already.
Mosquito Repellent Spray with Essential Oils
Choose your base: ⅓ cup of witch hazel | ¼ cup of apple cider vinegar | 1 cup white vinegar
Choose your favorite essential oils: 40-50 drops (suggested: citronella, eucalyptus, peppermint, lavender, rosemary)
Mosquito Repellent Spray with Herbs
In a spray bottle, mix 2 tablespoons of finely chopped mint, 6 tablespoons of finely chopped fresh herbs (catnip, citronella, lavender, cloves, etc.), 1 cup of water, 1 cup of witch hazel or rubbing alcohol.
Mosquito Repellent Candle
Grab an empty mason jar! Take 2 lemon slices, 2 lime slices, 2 rosemary sprigs, 10 drops of lemon eucalyptus essential oil, and fill the rest of the way with water. Use 1 tealight candle to float at the top and light it up!
To-Do’s To Keep Away the Mosquitoes
Minimize standing water wherever possible, mosquitoes reproduce here!
Use your fans outdoors to keep the air in motion.
Minimize the shade in your yard, mosquitoes flock to cooler spots.
